Hempcrete (retrofit)
Hempcrete, or hemp-lime, is an insulating material formed by mixing hemp ‘shiv’ (the woody stem of the industrial hemp plant) with a lime binder. This medium-density, vapour-open material can be cast in-situ, or bought as precast blocks, for use as insulation and/or walling material in walls, floor slabs, ceilings or roof insulation. Hempcrete is a hugely versatile material that provides many benefits and can be used in both new build and retrofit. It is both vapour-permeable and hygroscopic, meaning that the material “breathes”; regulating its own moisture content and the humidity within the room, and providing a healthy living environment.
