Cast-on-site Hempcrete (Roof)

The roof is the most important part of a building’s shelter from the weather, and is typically responsible for 25% of heat-loss through the building envelope, so the choice of materials in a roof build up is crucial. There are numerous natural insulation materials that can be used above, below or between the roof structure that have excellent thermal performance, vapour-permeability, low-embodied carbon, and no toxic off-gassing.

Hempcrete can be used in either cold or warm roof details, but it is important that the movement of vapour is controlled by appropriately selected build up of materials. When constructing a vapour-open warm roof envelope, it is crucial to include a ventilation layer between the insulation and final roof finish to allow moisture to be vented away.
